Ohio Soil Health Week

Save the date for the first annual Ohio Soil Health Week, November 10-16!

Ohio Soil Health Week will officially recognize Ohio’s most valuable natural resource: soil! Although healthy soil is essential for our farmers, economy, climate, and communities, there’s little being done to promote and strengthen efforts to protect this natural resource. Ohio Soil Health Week will change that.

OEFFA and the Ohio Soil Health Initiative (OSHI) are working to designate a weeklong celebration of soil health with outreach and education to raise awareness of the importance of healthy soils. Ohio Soil Health Week will be held during the second full week of November, with the Wednesday of that week designated “Ohio Soil Health Day.” This timing honors the late David Brandt, a sustainable agriculture champion and the “godfather of soil health,” whose birthday is that week.

The Legislation

We expect Ohio Senator Tim Schaffer to introduce the OSHI/OEFFA-backed Ohio Soil Health Week amendment to H.B. 162 (legislation that would make day and week designations related to agriculture) on March 26.

Interested in advocating for this legislation? Reach out to lauren@oeffa.org about providing in-person testimony, written testimony, or a letter of support. Be sure to add your name to the below petition, too!

The Lobby Day

Our lobby day is set for Wednesday, April 10, and will take place at the Ohio Statehouse/The Rife Center in Columbus.

We will begin the day with a light, OEFFA-provided breakfast. Then we’ll proceed with some advocacy training, eat an OEFFA-provided lunch, and then move on to meetings with our state elected officials. We’ll educate them on the importance of soil health and ways that policy can support the adoption of good soil health practices on farms across Ohio.

If this will be your first time lobbying with lawmakers, no need to worry. We will provide materials and training opportunities to help you share your stories effectively and make a powerful impact. Plus, you’ll have a chance to connect with others who share your goal to protect Ohio’s soils for future generations!
